What you should know about emergency lighting
Emergency lighting is a necessity for building compliance, yet it’s often overlooked.
There is an Australian Standard for the inspection and maintenance of emergency lighting – AS/NZS 2293.2. Even so, we regularly see commercial buildings across Perth that have fallen behind on maintenance, and in some cases buildings with no emergency lighting system at all.
Ongoing inspection and maintenance comes at a cost, but as with anything in the maintenance world, staying on top of it is far better than discovering a large number of failed fittings at once.
Testing every six months
Emergency lighting must be inspected and tested at least once every six months. The test checks that the battery in each fitting will keep the light on when power is lost. It must hold for 90 minutes, or the fitting does not comply.
Across many Perth buildings, fittings installed during the original build are now ageing and failing this test.
The emergency lighting log book
Alongside the system itself there should be an emergency lighting log book. It’s just as important as the fittings: it lets technicians record their findings and provides proof that you are meeting this essential safety requirement.
